We have come a long way from the Stone Age. Evolution
has not just been observed in species but in materials too. Take for example
how it’s come to alloys from metals, graphene from carbon, self-healing
polymers from monomers and so on...
Materials are atoms combined in the solid state. The
science behind the discovery, synthesis, structure and application of these
materials is studied in Materials Science Field and the engineering techniques
employed in their characterization has led to new field of study named the
Materials Science and Engineering.
Progress in this field of engineering has led to
improved material solutions to meet the technological, societal and
environmental problems. The advancements in this field have led to development
of biomaterials, ceramics, electronic materials, metals, and polymers which
have been widely employed in fields of biotechnology, aerospace and transport,
renewable and sustainable energy, healthcare and communications and information
technology.
